چکیده

For a bunched beam, coherent energy spread generated within a bending system may couple to the transverse (bending) plane coordinates through the chromatic transfer functions of the particular beamline—even an achromatic beamline. The resulting transverse emittance dilution is dependent on the magnitude of the energy spread, its generation rate along the beamline, and the beamline’s chromatic transfer functions. The coherent energy spread may be due to resistive-wall wakefields or coherent synchrotron radiation. For specific beamlines, such as a periodic arc or wiggler, the longitudinal-to-transverse coupling is minimal and, in ideal cases, completely suppressed resulting in reduction or cancellation of all transverse emittance dilution effects. This is of particular interest for microbunch transport or compression systems such as exist in future FEL or linear collider projects. Linac Design for Dalian Coherent Light Source*

Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS) will use a 300MeV LINAC to produce fully coherent photon pulses in the wavelength range between 150-50nm by high gain harmonic generation free electron laser (FEL) scheme [1]. Beam quality requirements for the linear accelerator (linac) are critical, including not only the beam brightness, but also the stability and the reliability. In this paper, optimizatio...

Experimental Approaches of Emittance Dilution Induced by Misalignments in a Photoinjector

One of the main issues in the generation of a highbrightness electron beam is the preservation of beam emittance. Here we discuss one of possible source of the emittance dilution by the rf kick due to misalignment. The emittance of a high-brightness electron beam from a photoinjector is affected by the status of alignments due to deflection force by the accelerating field. The misaligned beam w...

Emittance growth during bunch compression in the CTF-II

Measurements of the beam emittance during bunch compression in the CLIC Test Facility (CTF-II) are described. The measurements were made with different beam charges and different energy correlations versus the bunch compressor settings which were varied from no compression through the point of full compression and to overcompression. Significant increases in the beam emittance were observed wit...

Chirping the LCLS Electron Beam

We explore scenarios for generating a linear time-correlated energy spread in the LCLS electron bunch, prior to the undulator, that is needed for optical (x-ray) pulse compression. The correlated energy spread (‘chirp’) is formed by generating an energy gradient along the length of the electron bunch using RF phasing and/or longitudinal wakefields of the accelerating structures. The sign of the...

Investigation of Microbunching-instability in Berlinpro

The Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) is building an energy recovery linac (ERL) prototype, bERLinPro, to demonstrate the ERL principle at low emittance and high currents. As, maintaining the low emittance and energy spread is crucial for generation of high brightness synchrotron radiation, the deep understanding and control of effects degrading the emittance and energy spread are of major interes...
